In a peaceful town in Apulia, a parade comprised of 350 atmosphere players takes place every year. It tells a story that nobody has ever heard before. A group of young people tries to connect it with local legends. How did all of this start? Unexpectedly enough, with the arrival of a team of archaeologists. This ethnographic account presents the implications and the repercussions of this encounter between archaeology professionals and a collectivity or, better, a group of young people who discover their passion for history, and feed it. From hence forward, research reveals two unsuspected consequences: the enhancement and re-writing of local history, which in the words of the protagonists becomes “heritage to share”, and the creation of an historical parade (already thirty years old now) that has its own specific language and which the author sees as a “social use of history”.

In una tranquilla cittadina pugliese un corteo storico dilaga, ogni anno, coi suoi 350 figuranti. Racconta una storia che nessuno aveva mai sentito. Un gruppo di giovani cerca di legarla alle leggende locali. Da dove nasce tutto ciò? Inaspettatamente, dall’arrivo di un’équipe di archeologi. L’etnografia di quest’articolo rende conto delle implicazioni e delle ripercussioni dell’incontro fra professionisti dell’archeologia e una collettività, o meglio un gruppo di giovani, che scopre e nutre una passione per la storia. Da qui, due conseguenze inattese: la patrimonializzazione della storia, che i protagonisti valorizzano e riscrivono, e la creazione di un corteo storico, ormai quasi trentennale, che nel suo specifico linguaggio viene qui letto come un “uso sociale della storia”.
